• Brava Nightclub in San Juan

The Bottom LineIs there a better place to be when the sun goes down than Club Brava? If you like a sexy crowd, terrific music mixed by talented DJs, and ample space to dance and chill, then the answer is no.Pros
  • My vote for hottest club in San Juan.
  • Two floors and several bars provides ample spaces to hang out.
  • The location in the El San Juan Hotel only helps.
  • Can get highly selective on weekends - dress to impress if you want to get in.
  • Given its popularity, can get packed despite the large space.
  • The $20 cover (guys and girls) is steep.
  • The outdoor terraces on the second floor make for a welcome respite from the steamy indoors.
  • The light show is terrific, adding to the electric atmosphere of the place.
  • The main floor is reserved for the most dance tunes, while the upper level plays house and more lounge-friendly music.
Guide Review - Review of Brava Nightclub in San Juan
The El San Juan Hotel has a bit of everything. A terrific casino (in my opinion, the best in San Juan); a great restaurant and lounge in Koco; and what I feel is the best club in Puerto Rico: Brava.
What makes Brava the best? For starters, it's got space: a huge dance floor, several bars, a VIP room, and outdoor terraces are spread out over two levels. Of course, all that space would mean little if there weren't people in it, which brings me to my next point: Brava consistently attracts a young, well-dressed crowd that loves to party. Then there's the music: a mix of house, techno, hip hop, and raggaetón. Guest DJs abound, celebs can often be spotted in the VIP Room, and the place will keep you on your feet until 5 am.
All that means long lines on weekeend nights, because Brava is the place to be. It also means that you have to belong. Show up in your company logo tee shirt and jeans, and you might be stuck listening to the muffled thumping of the music from the outside for a long time.

  • Club Lazer

NCPR1.jpg NCPR4.jpg
The Bottom LineClub Lazer has been keeping Old San Juan vibrating to a heavy bass beat for over 20 years. That kind of longevity in a nightclub, in Puerto Rico or anywhere else, is rare. The club maintains its popularity thanks to its music, playing all the favorites of Puerto Rico's raggaetón fans, and of course, its lazer light shows. But the experience comes with a few caveats.Pros
  • The biggest club in Old San Juan.
  • Attracts excellent local and international guest DJs.
  • Three levels of space give you plenty of niches to explore.
  • Before midnight the place is dead.
  • The place admittedly draws a mixed crowd.
  • Among the famous DJs to have been hosted at the club is hip hop icon DMX.
  • Check out the image gallery for a closer look at Club Lazer.
  • The club is located on 251 Cruz Street in Old San Juan. For more information, call 787-725-7581.
Guide Review - Review of Club Lazer in Old San JuanI first showed up at Club Lazer on a Friday night; there was hardly twenty people in the entire place, and given that there are three floors of space, that's saying something. Then I went back on a Saturday, when the vibe was much more fun. It was raggaetón night (for the ladies, you get in free and receive a free glass of wine to boot). Saturday night is also the night that Club Lazer trots out male and female strippers for its audience, and that certainly contributed to the party-like atmosphere. But Sunday is perhaps the best day of all at the club, when the happy hour goes until 1 am and entrance is free until 1.
The club's three levels give you a choice of moods, environments, and music. The main dance floor, in retro black-and-white checkered squares, is the place to be for heavy raggaetón hits and the laser lights that give the club its name. The lowest level of the club has a dimly lit red velvet lounge ideal for chilling out (and other, more intimate activities). The other welcome spot is the open-air rooftop terrace provides, where you can sometimes buy freshly barbecued pinchos, or skewers.
Dressing sexy always helps, especially when there's a line, but Club Lazer is a bit more casual than, say, Club Brava .The club keeps going until the wee hours, but it doesn't get going until about midnight or so. And keep track of the club's schedule of events; once a month, it hosts a special night, be it a booty-dance competition or amateur MC night.
So what's the down side? For some locals, it's merely passé, and they've moved on to other haunts. Some of my friends have complained that the crowd isn't always the best. But for all that, Club Lazer gives you a full night out on the town, and is everything a nightclub should be.

  • El Patio de Sam

El Patio de Sam is a Puerto Rican institution on Calle de San Sebastián. It is frequented by all types of personalities, American expatriates and local celebrities. Best known for its burgers, patrons are also impressed by its Creole cuisine. While the prices may appear steep, the burger plates(loaded with extras) are quite filling. The establishment features live entertainment M-Sa. Even though the dining room is indoors, one gets the sense that they are dining al fresco, under a skylight. Creole specialties include Asopao (heavy rice soup), rabbit, and seafood crepes.
